Scanning Louisville area police
The Louisville area has always been divided into two sections, one being Jefferson county and the other was the city of Louisville. Each had it's own police, fire and EMS services and radio systems. In 2003 the citizens of Louisville and Jefferson county voted to merge the city and county governments to form one Louisville metro government.
Today the Louisville area is still seperated into two areas. The former city of Louisville is called the URBAN SERVICE DISTRICT and the unincorporated area around the old city limits formerly known as Jefferson county is the SUBURBAN SERVICE DISTRICT.
Just like scanning the Louisville fire services, monitoring the Louisville area police units is a little tricky. The old city police department used a UHF radio system and the old county police used VHF so when merger came around this made communicating between the urban and suburban police divisons difficult ,although today they have made it a little easier by installing a Moto-Bridge system so that urban and suburban units can communicate over one shared channel.
The Louisville metro area and the smaller cities within are served by about 10 different law enforcement agencies including Louisville Metro Police (LMPD), Jefferson County Sheriff's Office(JCSO), Middletown Police, Jeffersontown Police, Shively Police, West Buechel Police, City of Lynn View Police, Anchorage Police, Kentucky Vehicle Enforcement (KVE) and the Kentucky State Police (KSP).
Many of the smaller departments use simplex systems so you may have trouble receiving them.Note the KSP and KVE share a digitally encoded system so you will need a digital capable scanner in order to monitor them.
Louisville METRO Police Department
The LMPD unit number system is pretty simple. The patrol or "Beat Cars" are identified using a 3 digit-1 letter ID number. The first number is the divison the unit is assigned to( 1 thru 8), the second number is the work shift or "Platoon" of that officer and the third number indicates what sector or "Beat" within the divison the unit is assigned to patrol. The letter is used to identify that individual unit of that divison, platoon and beat because there is usually more then one unit patroling each beat.
Here's an example,if you hear an LMPD unit identify as 123-ADAM it means that unit is assigned to the 1st divison, 2nd platoon, beat 3 and that unit is the "A" unit on that beat.
The command staff units identify using a single or double digit unit number.
Here are the other unit number types:
- 900-999 Detectives, Evidence Tech Unit & Support Personnel
- 1100-1199 Traffic Officers, Tow Trucks & Civilian Control Units
- 1200-1299 Crimes Against Children Unit
- 1300-1399 Narcotics & Vice
- 1400-1499 Probation & Parole
- 1500-1599 Training, Planning and other units
- 1600-1699 Possibly Chaplins
- 1700-1799 Radio Shop
Note that anytime you here a unit say "X-RAY" before giving his unit number it means that unit is off duty, for example "X-RAY 123-ADAM TO RADIO".
